Union vows to resist PHCN’s privatisation

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI— NATIONAL President of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEC, Mr. Bede Okpara, weekend, said they will resist government’s move to privatise the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.

Okpara, who spoke in Ughelli, Delta State, at a workshop and election hosted by the Ughelli Power Station chapter of the association, said privatisation of PHCN was not the solution to the poor supply of power in the country.

Blaming the poor power situation on obsolete machines, he said government was not addressing the situation the right way. He added that PHCN was genera-ting more than enough funds to pay its wage bill and service its equip-ment for better power supply to its consumers.

According to him, companies such as Delta Steel Company, Daily Times among others, which were privatised were still not doing well, insisting that those wan-ting to generate power in the country could do so without necessarily taking over PHCN.

He cautioned Nigerians against vandalisation of PHCN equipment, urging them to pay their electricity bills promptly to enable the company serve them better.

Chapter chairman, Engr Juliana Okpoko, in her remarks, urged women to go into politics to enable them contribute their quota to nation building, particularly in the electricity industry.

Okpoko commended the management of the Ughelli Power station for maintaining the turbines and providing constant power generation despite the paucity of funds and obsolete machines.
