ADO-EKITI— PEOPLES’S Democratic Party, PDP, in Ekiti State, has given reason why the party resisted the demolition of a section of its secretariat located on Ajilosun Street, Ikere Road Ado-Ekiti by the agents of the state government on Monday.
Chairman of the Party, Chief Bola Olu –Ojo, Tuesday described the action of government as “wicked and vindictive.”
Olu-Ojo told Journalists that party members decided to resist the planned demolition since the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, office which is located on the same street was spared from the planned demolition by the state government.
According to him, “the attempted demolition of the party’s secretariat was resisted because that of the ACN, which is closer to the road than ours, was not touched.”
He linked the planned demolition to a rally by the youth wing of the party in Ado Ekiti last week.
He said: “The hurried way in which they brought their bulldozer to our office twas not unconnected with the youth rally that we held last Friday, in spite of the government’s efforts to stop it. In spite of the fact that nothing has been done in all the areas where houses were demolished in Ado-Ekiti by the government of Fayemi, attempt was made at demolishing a section of our party’s secretariat located along Ajilosun Street, Ado-Ekiti. Our position is that Fayemi should first demolish his own party secretariat, which is closer to the road than our own before bringing his agents of destructions to ours.”
Meantime, The Ekiti Justice Group, EJG, has urged residents of Ado-Ekiti, the State capital to henceforth, resist any attempt by the State government to demolish their houses.
The group said it was wicked and devilish for a government that has not done anything on the areas where houses and shops were demolished to be destroying houses in others areas.
The group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Dr. Tunji Oluwasanmi said it was more inhuman for peoples’ sources of livelihood to be destroyed by a government that is holding their resources in trust for them without provision for alternative settlement or compensation.
“Our position is that; from now on, Ekiti people should begin to take their destiny in their hands by resisting any attempt to demolish their houses or shops.
“The people must begin to ask questions as to what has happened to the areas where buildings were demolished?
“They should ask Dr Kayode Fayemi’s demolition squad what benefits they stand to derive from the demolition?
“Most importantly, they should ask them what happens to those whose sources of livelihood have been destroyed?
“Therefore, we are calling on Ekiti people to bring back that spirit of resistance in them by driving away anyone that brings bulldozer to their houses away.”
