Protesters against 3rd term for Bariga LCDA boss

By NNAMDI OJIEGO
LAGOS—Ahead of the October 22 local government polls in Lagos State, some groups, including youth organisations and women associations have continued to protest what they called the “imposition of candidates” on the people by the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Tuesday, women and youth groups in the Bariga area of the state staged a peaceful demonstration against the imposition of the incumbent chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area, Mr. Sulaimon Akeem, as ACN flagbearer for  the forthcoming council election.

The protesters thereafter stormed the Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, residence of the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, with placards with inscriptions such as “Bariga youths say no to Oris,”  “Oris must go, No room for re-sit or 3rd term,” among others, to register their complaints.

They claimed that Akeem had not done anything meaningful in his six years as the council boss to warrant his re-election for a third term. They added that the people were yet to witness any dividends of democracy in the area under his tenure.

Spokesman of the protesters and youth leader, Bariga indigenes, Mr. Olukayode Ishola, said the protest was necessitated by the alleged  maladministration and bad leadership of Akeem.

He said: “Bariga people are tired of bad leadership of Sulaimon Akeem. We need a change because we are suffering. Akeem had failed in every aspect you can think of. Our roads are very bad, our health centres are not working, security is zero. In fact, we have not benefited anything from his administration.”
