Police nab man with 5 guns, ammunition

Sapele—Police in Sapele, Delta State have, arrested one Gana Odebala for being in possession of five pump action guns and live ammunition.

A  police source at the Sapele Police Station  said the suspect was from Oko-Ovwori Community in Sapele Local Government Area. The suspect was said to have been arrested at Okurighwre-Okpe near, Sapele, where he had allegedly gone to assassinate one Mr. Sunday Okoro, over who heads the youth wing of Amukpe community.

It was gathered that supporters of both men had engaged themselves in a gun battle in Okurighrwe,  Sunday morning, forcing worshipers at churches in the area to scamper for safety.

Vehicular movements was also halted,  while a detachment of policemen was deployed to the area to restore order.

At about noon of the same day, the battle shifted to Oko-Ovwori axis, where the police were said to have arrested the alleged gang leader, Odebala.

At press time, Odebala was still being detained at the Sapele Police Command.  Police Public Relations Office, PPRO,   Mr. Charles Muka, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation into the matter was in progress.

Also, there was an uneasy calm in Sapele-Okpe Community, yesterday, following report of possible police crack-down on some of the executives of the community.

A Sapele/Okpe community leader, Mr. Bright Ogodo,  told Vanguard on phone that they had information that the police had ordered a crack-down on some leaders, for refusing to take orders from the said chief, whose tenure as Chairman of Sapele/Okpe Land Trust Committee had expired  after 42 years in office.

Ogodo, however, called for caution on the part of the police.
