NURTW charges Jonathan on insecurity

BY Suzan Edeh

Bauchi-The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Bauchi State chapter has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to pay more attention to the current security challenges facing the country instead of initiating policies that would generate more problems for the electorate.

The Bauchi State Secretary of the union, Comrade Nasiru Aliyu made this call while speaking with newsmen Monday against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s plan to withdraw fuel subsidy in the country.

He said: “Let the government rehabilitate our bad roads, address the problem of joblessness among youths as well as insecurity rather than removing fuel subsidy which will worsen the economic condition of the people.”

’’There is every possibility for prices of commodoties to skyrocket if the Federal Government removes the fuel subsidy,” he said.

Nasiru who said NURTW members would suffer greatly as they utilise almost 75 percent petroleum products in the country further warned against the consequencies of such action, which he added would impact ‘’negatively’’ on Nigerians.

In another development, the Bauchi state Chapter of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycles Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria, ACOMORAN, has also condemned the Federal Government’s proposal to remove fuel subsidy advising the National Assembly to reject the move and save the country from avoidable industrial crises

Deputy Chairman of the association, Ubale Ahmed urged the Federal Government to realise that it was wrong for it to impose hardship on the masses in its bid to pay the new N18,000 minimum wage to workers since most people were not civil servants.

“Many people in this country are jobless and these set of people will not find things funny, if the fuel subsidy is removed. So the issue of removing fuel subsidy should be set aside,” he said.
