Guard killed as police foil bank robbery

By EVELYN USMAN
LAGOS—Eight gunmen, yesterday, stormed the Fagba, Ifako- Ijaye branch of a new generation bank, killing one and injuring several others.

It was gathered that police foiled attempt by the bandits to gain access into the vault, following a shoot-out, which sent residents of the area scampering for safety.

Eyewitnesses said the robbers came in an unmarked Toyota Previa car and a motorcycle, pretending to be customers. But on reaching where the Automated Teller Machine, ATM, was mounted, they reportedly announced their presence by opening fire. Their attempt to enter through the electronic door failed. Frustrated, they destroyed the ATM machine, from where four of them reportedly gained access into the banking hall.

Policemen from different divisions under the area command, including anti-robbery operatives were said to have arrived the scene and engaged the robbers in a shoot-out, which forced the robbers to abandon their operation.

The dead man was  discovered to be a private security guard attached to the bank, while the injured were  rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Samuel Jinadu, could not be reached as his phone rang out.
