Gov’s Cup: Nigerians bow out

Three members of the Nigeria Davies Cup team, Abdulmumini Babalola, Shehu Lawal and Candy Idoko, crashed out of the Governor’s Cup Futures I. They were joined in the spectators’ stand by two other top Nigerian players, who also lost their singles matches.

After making waves in their respective first round matches on Monday and Tuesday, the Nigerians were brought down to earth as they failed to live up to expectations of most tennis fans who watched their second round matches at the Lagos |Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan.

Lawal bowed to tournament’s seventh seed, Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan of India, who won in two sets of 6-0, 6-3, while Babalola lost to top seed, Capkovic Kamil of Slovakia in straight sets of 4-6, 2-6. Also on the losing trail yesterday was Kingsley Enosoregbe, who was no match for second seed, Karan Rastogi of India, who won in easy sets of 6-2,6-2.

Idoko, was blown apart in straight sets score of 1-6, 2-6 by eight seed, Vijayant Malik of India.

Sara Adegoke, the lone surviving Nigerian women player in the $25 000 singles draw, lost 0-6, 0-6 quick sets to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine
