ENUGU—Enugu State Government has been called upon to urgently rehabilitate the dilapidated primary schools which have become unfit for teaching and learning in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in the education sector.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued at a one-day forum on Quality Basic Education between Enugu State Civil Society Organisations and the media held at Bridgwaters Hotel, Enugu yesterday.
The participants, including media stakeholders, civil society and faith-based organisations observed with concern, “the poor learning environment, inadequate school supervision, absence of teaching/learning aid, lack of qualified teachers, lack of community involvement and participation in the management of schools in the state.”
After x-raying the state of education in the state in line with the desire to realize the MDG target in education, the participants noted that “there is urgent need for the state government to rehabilitate the existing primary schools whose structure have become dilapidated and unfit for teaching and learning.”
The communiqué said that the state government’s recruitment of voluntary teachers was not ideally necessary at the moment, advising that efforts should rather be geared towards employing qualified teachers for key subjects.
