Nigeria’s Falcons have a onerous task ahead in their second leg London 2012 Olympic qualifiers against their Cameroonian counterparts Saturday in Yaounde.
Nigerian football federation officials are banking on the team to turn the tide of bad results, which plagued the country’s football of late. This include the failure by the Eagles to qualify
To achieve this, the Falcons led by Uche Eucheria need to play like they have never done before on the continent to avoid defeat. The African champions hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Abuja.
The team flew out yesterday to meet their opponents who have been boosted with their gold medal win at the last All Africa Games in Maputo. A win of any kind will see the Lioness making their first appearance in the Olympics. The Falcons have been to three consecutive Olympics.
“We’ve had some good level of preparation and we are ready for the match. With God on our side we will surely get the result we want,”said coach Uche.
She would be drawing inspiration from past when as a player she was in the team that beat Cameroon home and away during an African qualifier for the maiden FIFA women world cup in 1999.
Her coach then Paul Hamilton backed the Falcons to repeat the feat. “The Falcons should be able to weather the storm in Cameroon.
“We did it before I don’t see why we can beat them home and away this time,”said Hamilton in Lagos.
