Asaba—Delta State Government, Wednesday, warned that any contractor who disappears after collecting mobilisation fee or engages in shoddy job execution would be dragged before the Econo-mic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Commissioner for Works, Mr. Funkekeme Solomon, handed down the warning when he met with contractors handling government projects.
Warning them to sit up and show transparency, Solomon stressed the importance of executing quality work to reflect the actual cost of the projects.
Solomon said: “Any contractor who attempts to influence the field engineer assigned to monitor them (contrac-tors) will be sanctioned.”
It will be recalled that in May 2008, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan had said that some contractors had defrauded the state to the tune of N4 billion, vowing to recover the money.
Although the governor did not give the names of the affected contrac-tors, he told reporters that the discovery followed the verification exercise of projects executed in the state.
Governor Uduaghan had said: “I just got the report of the verification and we have contracts of about N4 billion that have question mark.
“They said some contractors collected mobilisation fees and did not go to site, while some got funny certificates that were not correct.”
