Umuahia— AS non-indigenes disengaged by Abia State Government continue to protest in their various states of origin, All Progressives Grand Alliance’s governorship candidate in last April’s election in the state, Reagan Ufomba, has condemned the action of the government, describing the policy as primitive and an act of vengeance.

He said: “The action is primitive, insensitive, retrogressive, divisive, vindictive and ironic.”

He also condemned what he called attack and uncharitable comments by Abia State Government on Most Rev. Lucious Ugorji, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, over his hallowed position on the on-going retrenchment of non-indigenes in Abia State civil service.

However, the Abia State chapter of Campaign for Democracy, CD, has thrown its weight behind the action of the government, saying government took the right action to protect its own citizens.

In a statement by its chairman, Mr. David Kalu, CD said there were no Abia indigenes working in any civil service of the four other South East states of Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.

According to Kalu, Governor Theodore Orji is retaliating an action taken by the other states over nine years ago, and wondered why the noise about his action.

He said: “The Campaign for Democracy, CD, Abia State, sees this to be the first time the governor and the government of Abia State is going through the right direction of empowering its citizens since Governor T. A. Orji started governing the state.

“During the governor’s campaign for his second term, one of the things he promised Abians is job creation and payment of the minimum wage. How does one expect him to achieve this if not by transferring non-indigenes back to their own states, so as to create vacancy for the displaced Abians from other States Civil Service since 1997?”
