The National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, has appealed to the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to resolve their disagreement in the interest of Nigerian students and future of the nation.
NANS National President, Comrade Dauda Mohammed, who made the appeal, charged the federal; government to see the ongoing strike of lecturers in the country as an issue that required urgent national attention.
NANS said: “It is our opinion that both parties in the agreement must this time around come to a final resolution, which must be made public as the recurring strike being experience on the same agreement is no longer acceptable to us as Nigerian students.”
The group sympathized with members of the academic fraternity on the hardships they had been made to face due to the prolonged non-implementation of existing agreements.
“It should be noted that government is a continuous process and hence any agreement reached by any previous government deserves to be honoured by parties in such agreement”, NANS said.
We frown at the inability of the incumbent Honorable Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayat Rufai towards taking the issue of the ASUU/FG agreement as a priority of the Ministry and her failure to make the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan understand the contentious areas of the agreement.
Mohammed said “while we patiently wait to see an end to this prolonged crisis within the shortest possible time, we urge all Nigerian students to remain calm and await what may be the next step to be taken by NANS towards putting an end to the incessant strike actions in our educational system”.
