Reports trigger more damage by soldiers on Ondo factory

BY DAYO JOHNSON
AKURE—IN apparent intolerance of the media report of the attack on Mr. Akintunde Adebiyi’s “Progress Wood Factory”, in Akure, Ondo State, another batch of Soldiers yesterday stormed the factory and caused more damage.

It will be recalled that no fewer than 30 Soldiers invaded the factory on Tuesday and vandalised it destroying and carting away equipment and other valuables worth over N50million.

Speaking about yesterday’s fresh attack, Adebiyi said some officers of the 323 Artillery Battalion, Owena Barracks, have been at loggerhead with him over the rent on the land on which his factory was built which they claim belongs to the Nigerian Army.

However, Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday wadded into the matter by inviting the Commanding Officer, Col. S. Nwafor for discussion to resolve the crisis.

An aide of the governor who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed the meeting lasted for an one hour.

He said “The governor was meeting with the Commanding officer, the Chief of staff and the officials of the state’s ministry of Land and Housing. I think there will be an official reaction after the meeting.”

Meantime, the soldiers were said to have stormed the factory very early to do more damage, alleging that Adebiyi portrayed them in bad light through the press.

Adebiyi told Vanguard in an emotion-laden voice that; “They destroyed our administrative office, pulled down the aluminum windows, and destroyed the roof of the factory, exposing it flood as a result of the downpour in the early hours of day.”

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Adeniran Aremu said appropriate investigation would be carried out on the matter.

He said “If a case of willful damage is reported against anybody or group of individuals, it is left for the police to investigate and we will do just that and bring culprits to book.”
