OSOGBO- Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Najeem Salaam, has said the mass failure recorded in the National Examination Council, NECO, has again brought to fore the fundamental decay in the nation’s education sector.
In a statement by the Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Goke Butika, he said it was high time President Goodluck Jonathan declared state of emergency in the education sector.
He argued that the mass failure which has become a recurring decimal had sent a wrong signal touching the future of the nation.
Salaam said it was appalling that at the time scientists in Europe and other parts of the world were breaking new grounds and discoveries, the only news that could be posted to the world from Nigeria was a mass failure of students who sat for national examination.
The speaker advised the federal government to borrow leaf from Osun where the government organised education summit to x-ray remote and immediate causes of the massive failure with a view to finding lasting solution.
He said the nation would be sitting on a keg of gun powder if a desperate measure to bring back the education sector from the brink of collapse was not put in place; saying that the nation could not afford to toy with the future of the youth if the developmental plans of the government would be sustained.
