Warsaw: Nigerian- born Member of Parliament (MP) in Poland John Godson on Sunday in Warsaw tasked the federal government on the need for decisive implementation of security policies in the country.
Godson, who spoke against the backdrop of recent security challenges in parts of the country, said that the lack of enforcement of security policies and measures had made it difficult for government to curtail activities of Boko Haram sect.
“Government has to be more decisive, and firm in adopting and implementing security measures, otherwise people would see it as being weak. Nobody is above the state, law is law and should be respected by all.’’
Godson, who was voted into the Polish parliament in 2010, and the first black parliamentarian in that country, recommended consistency in security policies, as well as bringing perpetrators to justice among others as ways of addressing the challenges.
The MP, who also heads the Polish-Nigeria group in the parliament, said the level of trade between both nations was low given the vast opportunities for investment.
He said the group was established to among others promote business development between both countries.
According to him, the opportunities for trade and investment abound in both countries in sectors varying from coal to power projects and education.
“ For instance it is cheaper to do a master’s programme in Poland as it cost 2000 euros, a good deal compared to the UK and U.S.’’
Godson said collaboration between the Polish and Nigerian parliaments would further deepen political and economic diplomacy and erase the misconception and lack of information on Nigeria which were barriers to trade between the two countries.
“The image of Africa in Europe is negative, Africa is often seen as a continent of disease, hunger, war and poverty, all these I intend to change through promoting trade and investment.
“ As you are aware, a Polish company has been awarded a coal to energy project in Nigeria, I met with the former Minister of power on the need to key into the expertise of the Poles, all these and more I intend to do’’ he said.
Godson, a member of the ruling Civil Platform Party, migrated to Poland in 1993. ( NAN )
He is married to a Polish woman and the couple has four children.
