Nigeria is still down more than one week the 10th All Africa Games kicked off here in Maputo, Mozambique.
Sports minister Yusuf Suleiman had vowed, in a press conference, that Nigeria would rise again after South Africa took unassailable lead then with 20 gold medals against Nigeria’s one.
He said that Nigeria would soon catch up with the contenders. Four days after his assurance Nigeria is still at the 8th position with only additional two gold medals.
At the end of competitions on Saturday, 94 gold medals had been won by 12 countries with South Africa having 44.
South Africa is leading on the table with 99 medals, followed by Egypt, 22, and Tunisia,32 medals.
Algeria, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, and Nigeria are placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eight respectively, while the hosts, Mozambique, are 13th on the medals table.
Nigeria has won 20 medals, comprising three gold, eight silver and nine bronze.
The records show that 83 silver medals have so far been won by 15 countries, while 113 bronze have been won by 22 countries.
Nigeria won two gold medals in table tennis and one from badminton.
