Ibadan flood: CCECC donates N30m bridge

IBADAN—A temporary bridge linking the residents of Apete to other parts of Ibadan has been commissioned by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The Deputy Managing Director of CCECC Nig. Ltd Mr. Shi Hong Bing, that constructed the bridge, told Vanguard that it cost the company N30.million.

He however said the company did not collect any money from the government for the project.

Residents of the community located behind the Polytechnic, Ibadan were cut off from the rest of the city, following the collapse of the bridge after a flood unleashed havoc on the metropolis on August 26, 2011 which claimed many lives and property.

The governor said after inspecting the bridge that he was satisfied with the job done by the contractor, saying it would bring relief to the people of the area.

He said government would find a lasting solution to the flood-associated problem in the area through the construction of a ‘rugged bridge’ that would last for a long time.

Besides, Senator Ajimobi said that dredging and embankment would also be done to allow for free flow of water in the river.

The Deputy Managing Director of CCECC Nig. Ltd. earlier explained that large quantity of sand and other materials were used to construct the temporary bridge which he said was done within four days.

He said that the bridge would continue to serve the residents of the area pending the construction of a permanent one by his firm, adding that the heavy equipment needed for the construction of the permanent bridge would be brought from Lagos.

Meantime, the Ondo State Government yesterday donated relief materials worth millions of Naira to the victims of flood disaster in Ibadan, Oyo State, even as Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, offered solution to the recurring flood disaster in Ibadan.

The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi presented the gift items on behalf of Governor Olusegun Mimiko to the Deputy Governor of Oyo State Hon. Moses Adeyemo at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

Senator Olufemi Lanlehin on his part, spoke while distributing relief materials to the victims of the flood disaster that ravaged the city claiming several lives and rendering hundreds of others homeless.
