Cleric accuses politicians of corruption

By FESTUS AHON
UGHELLI—PARISH priest of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ughelli, Delta State, Rev Fr.Christopher Ogaga, yesterday, said Nigerian politicians were enriching themselves to the detriment of the masses.

Ogaga, in his homily at a thanksgiving service for Mr. Akpodiete Edoja, member representing Ughelli North constituency II in the Delta State House of Assembly, lamented that politicians had only helped increase poverty in the country rather than alleviating the sufferings of the people.

He said leaders in the country were self-serving, enjoining them to be more responsive to the needs of the people. He noted that instead of addressing the needs of the people, they were busy taking advantage of the problems of the electorate to their personal benefits and that of members of their immediate families.

Fr. Ogaga urged political office holders to be accountable to the masses, saying, they should see their positions as a call to duty.

Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the thanksgiving service, Mr. Edoja reassured his constituents that he will address their needs.

He said his cardinal agenda was to add value to the lives of the people of the constituency and urged them to continue to support him.
