Boko Haram scare in Warri

By Emma Amaize

WARRI-THERE was panic in Warri, Delta State, weekend, over reports that members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had infiltrated the town.

State Police Command had, last week, following threats by the group to attack Lagos, Delta, Anambra states and other cities in the South, spread its intelligence networks. The Delta Waterways Security Commi-ttee, DWSC, Warri, also placed its men on the alert.

However, an unsubstan-tiated report that Boko Haram members were already in Warri sent resi-dents quivering. Security agents contacted by Vanguard denied the report.

Niger Delta for Credible and Visionary Leadership, NDCVL, also refuted the rumour, saying that its findings showed that the rumour of the arrival of Boko Haram in Warri and environs was untrue.

The group, in a statement by its National President, Mr. King-Jerry Prebor, urged residents of Warri and environs to go about their normal businesses without fear. It said: “We had made contacts with our members and with a specific message to them that every member should endeavour to know who his next neighour is.

“So far, reports received across Warri and environs indicated there was no trace of Boko Haram.”

It called on the security agents to check the rapid influx of some Northern youths, who are virtually everywhere in Warri as motorcycle (Okada) riders, pointing out that it could be used as disguise.
