Boko Haram: Immigration boss vows tighter border control

BY VICTORIA OJEME, Abuja
In the wake of the reported involvement of two Nigerien nationals in the activities of the Boko Haram sect, Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Mrs Rose Uzoma, Thursday vowed to tighten control of the nation’s 84 land, airports and 7 sea borders, as part of measures to shut out illegal migrants.

Speaking during a meeting with State Controllers of Immigration in Abuja , the Immigration boss warned that henceforth, State Commands would be held accountable for future lapses in checking the influx of illegal and criminally minded aliens.

According to Uzoma, “All hands must be on deck to remedy the unhealthy and intolerable security situation in the country. Irregular migration must be discourgared, in fact, prevented completely at this point in time.

“Henceforth, we must be certain of the identity and mission of those we are admitting into the country. On no account must any person without clear identity be allowed to enter the country. Moreso, field officers at all entry points and Immigration divisional Offices are expected to look out for foreigners suspected to be linked to or engaged in any criminal activity and report their findings to appropriate superior officers,” she added.

The Immigration boss warned the Service officials from colluding with illegal migrants to enter the country for pecuniary gains, saying, “We must all be prepared to get right whatever we have not done properly in the past, given the fact that the current threat to national security is, indeed threat to all of us.

“Businessmen in Immigration uniform must be unmasked and shown their way out of the service. We cannot condone any officer who regards the service as part-time job,” she warned.

Uzoma also directed State commands to work closely with local government authorities, officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), local commercial motor cycle operators, traditional rulers, as well as landlords and landlords so as to keep a tab on the movement of illegal migrants.

Two Nigerien nationals were on Monday reportedly identified as part of a bomb making and operational cell in Suleja in Niger State , by operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) revealing a cache of Improvised Explosives Devices (IED).

Some of the suspects also confessed to carrying out various bombings and killings in the State, Bauchi State as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
