ASUU assists acid victim with N3m

Yola – The national office of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has donated N3 million to enable an undergraduate student bathed with acid, Ms Franca Ogbu, to undergo medical treatment.

Ogbu is a student of the Modibbo Adama Federal University of Technology (FUT), Yola.

The ASUU Chairman of the FUT branch, Dr Daniel Dahiru, announced the donation  in Yola on Friday, saying the victim was responding to treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after undergoing seven plastic surgeries so far.

Dahiru said 10 additional plastic surgeries would still be performed on Ogbu.

“Franca needs not less than N11 million to undergo those additional 10 plastic surgeries abroad.”

The ASUU chairman said that during the North-East zonal meeting of the association held in Bauchi, each member from the zone was asked to donate N2,000, with the expected proceeds amounting to about N5.63 million.

He explained that the patient would be flown abroad by the end of October for the operations.

NAN recalls that Ogbu was bathed with acid in 2010 while she was reading at night in one of the university’s faculty libraries by an unknown person. (NAN)
