NEW YORK, (AFP) – Al-Qaeda is behind a credible, new, but still unconfirmed terrorism threat against the United States, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday.
In a speech in New York, Clinton referred to “the news last night of a specific, credible, but unconfirmed report that Al-Qaeda, again, is seeking to harm Americans and, in particular, to target New York and Washington.”
Earlier Friday, security advisors briefed President Barack Obama about the possible threat, which comes ahead of Sunday’s 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Officials said there had been no changes to Obama’s plans Sunday to visit New York, Shanksville, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon to commemorate 9/11.
