By Abdulwahab Abdulah
LAGOS — Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Nurudeen Alao, has called on Nigerian leaders to be selfless and accountable in whatever they do.

The don, who was  guest lecturer at the 17th pre-Ramadan lecture organised by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni, UMA, said: “We owe a responsibility to ourselves and future generations to maintain the integrity of our environment and invest massively in education at all levels.”

Alao noted that even with the abundant natural and human capital in Nigeria, the country, cannot “achieve full employment without industries. I am often amazed at our near total embrace of the Washington Consensus in our economic endeavours.”

Alao who spoke on “Islam, Leadership and Trust: Tripod for Good Governance,” said the immediate task for the present leadership of the country was to address poverty and corruption.
