The Nigeria Customs Service,NCS, Ogun State Command, has empowered members of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association,COWA, as part of its effort to enhance human capital development in the economy.
At the presentation, Public Relations Officer of the Command, Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Chike Ngige, said the initiative to empower COWA became imperative as some members of the association are less-privileged and widows who lost their husbands while in active service. He said: “This is Ramadan and some of the women you see here are widows who lost their husbands who were bread winners of the families in active service. The programme was put in place by the command to identify with the less-privileged and give them a sense of belonging in the service.”
Response, chairperson of COWA, Mrs. Richard Oteri, represented by her vice, Mrs. Nonyem Modum, who received various gifts presented to the association by the Command, thanked the command for the kind gesture.
She said:“We thank the command for empowering our women, especially at this Ramadan. This shows that the command is sensitive to the needs of the less-privileged.”
Oteri added: “COWA is putting measures in place to ensure that the empowerment of members takes a wider scope as soon as the inauguration of Ogun State Chapter is done. After the inauguration, our members are going to benefit from more economic empowerment in terms of skills training like hat making, catering, fashion designing, hair dressing and other vocational trainings capable of making them financially independents in the society.”
