Kidnappers demand N10m for ex-NLC VP’s release

OWERRI—Immediate past vice-president of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Special Adviser on Labour Matters to ex-governor of Imo State,  Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, Chief John Onyenemere, has been kidnapped.

His abductors, Vanguard gathered, had initially demanded N50 million ransom, but reduced it to N10m.

Onyenemere, also a former president of National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, was kidnapped near Owerri, last Friday when he took his daughter for post-JAMB exam.
Onyenemere  is 51 today.

Vanguard learnt that a man who called himself AK 47 had  contacted  the family and was said to have yesterday told the family that the ransom had been cut to N10m.

NLC has condemned the abduction and called for Onyenemere’s immediate release.

A Vice-President of NLC, Mr. Issa Aremu, told Vanguard that NLC would intervene to secure his immediate release.

Similarly, President of NUFBTE, Mr. Lateef Oyelekan, condemned the kidnap and called on Imo State Government to ensure  he was released unharmed to save the family from futher trauma.

Oyelekan, who succeeded Onyenemere as President of NUFBTE, also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the country and called on President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently address the security challenge.

Onyenemere served in the NLC for long.

Under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, from 1999, he served as the national Treasurer of NLC. After that, he was elected Vice President of NLC.

He was also served on the board of former Nigeria Social Trust Fund, NSITF, as a representative of NLC.
