Delta lawmaker, Speaker row over female commissioner-nominee

Asaba – THERE was drama, Thursday, at the sitting of the Delta State House of Assembly, following the insistence by a member that he be allowed to formally present a commissioner-nominee who hails from his constituency as was the practice in the House.

Princess Pat Ajudua from Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state was called out for screening and the Speaker, Mr. Victor Ochei, asked her to identify herself.

Member representing Oshimili North constituency in the Assembly, Mr. Ken Mozia, quickly raised a point of observation, after the woman made introductory remarks. Mozia said: “Mr. Speaker, It is unparliamentary and untraditional to be denied the privilege and honour to present the Commissioner-nominee from my council. I don’t think it is proper to shave a man’s head in his absence.”

In response, the Speaker said: “Member representing Oshimili North, by the grace of God, I am the Speaker and rule from the chair.

“The rules were handed to me for interpretation. I have not finished and you are castigating me.

“Mrs. Pat Ajudua, the immediate past Minority Leader of this House, because you served this House meritoriously, take a bow and go.”by austin ogwuda
