Driver arraigned for stabbing police officer

A 31-year-old commercial driver, Ifeanyi Okafor, was arraigned at the Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, yesterday for allegedly stabbing a police officer.

The accused, who is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, wounding and stabbing, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Onime Idowu told the court that the accused committed the alleged offences with another person now at large. He said the offences were committed on June 18, at Orile Iganmu Bus-stop, Lagos.

He said the accused conspired and wounded Cpl. Rebecca Ayodele, the policewoman on road duty at the bus stop. Idowu said that the accused and his gang assaulted the police officer while she was performing her lawful duty.

According to him, the accused stabbed Ayodele on her neck with a knife which caused her grievous harm. The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 356, 388 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State. Magistrate M.K.O. Fadeyi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the case till August 18 for further hearing.
