Banking reforms: Call Sanusi to order, Owie urges N-Assembly

 BY SIMON EBEGBULEM

BENIN-FORMER Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, yesterday, expressed worries over what he described as the alleged attempt to plunge the country  into fresh crisis through reforms in the banking sector.

He appealed to the National Assembly to call the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido to order, before the country’s economy was ruined.

“I urge the National Assembly to call the CBN Governor to order before he destroys Nigeria with his so-called banking reforms,” he said.

According to Senator Owie, since the CBN Governor came on board, there had been several reforms in the banking sector. He described as absurd, the alleged moves by the CBN to sell some banks, which it earlier rescued with billions of naira of public funds.

“Since he came on board at the Central Bank, he has spent billions of naira,  according to him, to rescue the banks. The same rescued banks, he now wants to sell.

Nigeria is not Sanusi’s emirate. As if the confusion he created in the banking sector was not enough, he has now moved on to heighten religious tension at this critical moment in Nigeria’s history. I call on my colleagues in the National Assembly to review as a matter of urgency, the CBN Act before Sanusi sets Nigeria ablaze,” he stated.
