YOLA — No fewer than eight persons were reported to have been burnt beyond recognition Friday as a truck loaded with petrol skipped off the road and crashed into a farm land along Yola-Mubi road in Adamawa state.
But police source confirmed that only one person was killed in the accident. The truck said to be carrying about 80 drums of petrol was heading from Girei to some border towns between Adamawa and the Republic of Cameroun when the incident occurred.
Eyewitness account told Vanguard at the scene of the accident that tyre burst on the side of the truck might be responsible.
According to the eyewitness account, they saw the accident and momentarily the entire vicinity was engulfed by fire.
The razing fire, according to eyewitness caught-up with some sympathizers who rushed to the scene of the incident from their farm land.
Vanguard learnt that most of the occupants of the ill-fated truck are Cameroonian Nationals, who thrive in the smuggling of petroleum products along the Nigeria Cameroun border towns in Adamawa state.
When Vanguard visited the scene of the accident late yesterday, burnt drums littered the entire area, even as the truck was still on flames.
Neither the police nor the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC could not give account of the details of the accident.
In the meantime, three other persons who sustained serious first degree burns in the accident are currently on admission at the Amenity ward of the State Specialist Hospital.
