ABUJA – Operatives of the State Security Services, SSS, yesterday, arrested Senator Alphonsus Igbeke, barring him from being sworn in as a Senator during the inauguration of the 7th National Assembly.
Senator Igbeke, who had represented Anambra North Senatorial District in the 6th Senate upon the nullification of the election of Senator Joy Emordi in 2010, was arrested at the National Assembly complex, while trying to gain entrance into the Senate Chamber.
He was arrested over allegation of presenting a forged Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, certificate of return proclaiming himself as Senator-elect representing Anambra North Senatorial District.
Meanwhile, Senators has promised to tackle the problems of poor budgetary implementation in order to enhance employment generation and underdevelopment in the country.
Senators that spoke to Vanguard after taking the oath of office rued the high rate of unemployment and the epileptic power supply in Nigeria, saying the sorry state of power and other infrastructure have contributed to poverty in the country in no small measures.
Senator Chris Anyanwu, APGA, Imo East who expressed confidence in the new leadership of the Senate, stressed that the Senate must show more commitment to the implementation of the nation’s budget.
