The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called for a ban on importation of building materials into the country.

In a memo to President Goodluck Jonathan, the body of professional engineers also canvassed for improved funding of the the Nigerian Building and Roads Research Institute (NBRRI). that NBRRI should be well funded and encouraged to attract investors who will embark on commercial on commercial production of developed cheaper alternative building materials.

The engineers noted the multiplier effect that the banning of the importation of building materials such as steel, wood, cement, paint, aluminum, glass, plastics, cables, piping, sand, quarry stones, roofing sheets could have on the larger economy.

The memo signed by the NSE president, Chief Olumuyiwa Ajibola, stated: “Government should spearhead this initiative by adopting the use of these researched materials in government projects.”

“In many countries of the world, the economy is booted or stabilised through implementation of construction projects.
