UYO-Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has inaugurated its fifth Assembly with the returning members elected principal officers. The Deputy Speaker, is a first-timer to the House.
The 26-member House was inaugurated on the proclamation of the state Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, in accordance with section 105, sub-section 3 of the 1999 constitution.
Ten members from the immediate past fourth assembly returned, while the remaining 16 are new members.
Presiding over the ceremony held in the chambers of the House, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Eddie Eyibo, who read Governor Akpabio’s letter of proclamation, asked members to elect their Speaker, who will lead and preside over plenary sessions.
Akpabio declares war on poverty, underdevt
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, yesterday, said he has declared war on poverty and underdevelopment in his state, as part of his second term agenda.
Akpabio who spoke while swearing-in the Secretary to State Government, Mr Umana Umana, said the attack on poverty will be tireless and unrelenting.
He said, “In the first term in office, I stated that I was tackling development with anger, but I have declared war on underdevelopment and poverty in our state. The march for development shall be relentless and our war aim is to do all within our power to fast track Akwa Ibom’s development.”
The governor said his resolve was to strengthen the bond of trust between the Akwa Ibom people and the government by embarking on life-changing developmental programmes and policies.
