Togo defeated Ghana 4-3 penalties (2-1 regulation time) to progress as Group B leaders to the semi final of the 2nd edition of the WAFU Cup tournament going on in Abeokuta.
The victorious Togolese side reduced to 10 men as early as the 21st minute of the first half contained the Ghanaians throughout the first half that recorded no goal.
The second half began with the Togolese players launching several attacks against the Ghanaians who were content with their midfield domination.
A long free kick from 40 yards out saw Ghana’s Aziz Ibrahim head the ball backwards and into his own net for Togo’s opening goal in the 52nd minute.
Ghana responded almost immediately when Asamoah Nat headed home the equalizer in the 58th minute.
The Ghanaian defence was again to called to duty when another Togo free kick beat the entire defence and the goalkeeper and rebound off the cross bar. Gueoje Cyril spotting jersey number 5 for Togo outran the Ghana defence line and slotted in the rebound.
The Ghanaians tried as they could but failed to get the desired equalizer.
The resultant penalty shootout saw Togo triumph 5_4 to lead Group B.
Togo will now face Liberia in the first semi final on Thursday while Ghana will slug it out with Nigeria in the second semi final billed for the same day at the MKO Abiola Stadium Abeokuta
