Enyimba beats Sunshine Stars 4-0

Aba (Abia) –  Enyimba International FC of Aba on Wednesday defeated Sunshine Stars of Akure 4-0 in a mid-week Premiership encounter.

Sunshine Stars,  currently second in the league table with 42 points from 21 matches, could not find their rhythm, even with four of their regulars, Atanda Shakibi, Cletus Itodo, Inah Ofeni and Ajani Ibrahim, all former players of Enyimba in the game.

The Ogunboje Gbenga- tutored boys were a shadow of themselves in the encounter which brought out the best in Enyimba players, who, last week in Aba, also beat the league leaders, Dolphin FC of Port Harcourt 3-0.

The match, which started 10 minutes behind schedule due to a heavy rainfall in Aba, saw Enyimba’s utility player, Victor Barnabas, scoring in the 8th minute of play.

Barnabas  could not finish the game due to an injury, and was replaced.

Samuel Tswanya netted the second in the 40th minute through a penalty  kick after a Sunshine defender handled the ball inside the box before interval,

Tyarkase David scored the third in the 65th minute and Ifeanyi Ede completed the demolition with the fourth goal in the 83rd minute.

Gbenga said shortly after the match that Enyimba played better and won.

“We are not making excuses; sometimes you have it rough, we don’t have to kill ourselves. We will go back home and study the match for necessary corrections in subsequent games,’’ he said.

He, however, said that result would not affect the team’s  determination to make an impact in the competition.

Enyimba’s coach, Evans Ogenyi said that the team’s worst days were over.

“We are still optimistic that our target is the league title. We are not blowing our trumpet about, as far as the competition is still on, the league is wide open,’’ he said. (NAN)
