Guest speaker, the delectable ex beauty queen, Nike Oshinowo-Soleye, took many by surprise when she spoke on “My take on style”. Although she was recently named Style Icon by Arise Magazine, she expressed disdain at the way people are obsessed about current trend, how we are perceived and how beautiful we are rather than the beauty that comes from within. She further expressed concern at the way society expects celebrities to wear a new outfit to every event citing herself as a victim of such prejudices.

In her opinion, beauty is more than skin deep and a self of self worth which our mothers had should transcend the milieu modernity even as she asked rhetorically, “is beauty no longer in the eyes of the beholder?”

She told her audience that in a world where people are ravaged by war, Tsunami, other natural disasters and civil unrest in the middle east, there are people who preoccupy themselves wondering why a celebrity such as herself should wear an outfit twice.

She pointed out that even as a style Icon herself, her concern is not with  what she wears or how many times she wear it or style for its sake, but a search for a balance in all things such that will produce health, beauty and inner peace citing simplicity and harmony as her watchword. She added that finding that balance between spiritual and material will in tun manifest itself in “poise, grace, and an individual sense of style”.

Some of the guests became her teaching aids, as she picked out a few guests whose styles were denominated by simplicity and class.
She concluded by saying that her personal style which has evolved over the years, has come to be more appreciative of our heritage, referring to our indigenous fabrics and designs which she says are more suited to our climate and culture.
