LUTH doctors seek improved power supply

By CHIOMA OBINNA

Medical doctors under the auspices of Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos University Teaching Hospitals (LUTH) Chapter, (LUTH-ARD) have decried the appalling state of power supply in the hospital, which has become a major obstacle in providing effective health care services.

President of the LUTH-ARD), Dr. Martins Momoh in a chat said the state of power in the hospital has made it difficult to carry out surgeries and run effective nursing care for patients.

He challenged the hospital management to rise to the occasion and improve the situation in the hospital to prevent cancellation of surgeries.

His words: “The problem of power generation had gone beyond what the hospital alone can handle. The situation in LUTH has negatively impacted on patient care and generally on quality of care as well as standard training.”

He lamented that although LUTH should be a research-based hospital that should be used in policy formulation, at the moment; it is not at the same level with its counterparts across the country.

He further expressed displeasure at what he described as “their resentment” to harassment and intimidation by the management of LUTH, condemning alleged embarrassment of resident doctors in the presence of patients.

“We would want to state categorically that progress and peace only subsist in an atmosphere devoid of rancor and acrimony, which should be the primary responsibility of the management.”

He, however, welcomed the Residency Training Committee set up by the Federal Government but expressed hope that its recommendations would holistically tackle all lapses as it exists within the current programmed.

He further enjoined the management to ensure appropriate payment for update courses, allowances, research grants and other related issues.

According to him, harmony in the sector would ensure productivity; patient benefits and this will make the profession move forward.
