Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, has thanked the Bayelsa electorate for overwhelmingly voting for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Assembly election, promising that the party would continue to keep faith with the people.
Sylva, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Doifie Ola, described the poll as demonstrating conclusively that the PDP is on the ground in Bayelsa State, “while the so-called opposition parties are merely building castles in the air.”
The governor declared: “I am comfortable with one so-called party winning on the pages of newspapers while we are winning in the hearts and minds of our people. Unfortunately, for the opposition, newspapers do not vote, only the people do.”
In the State House of Assembly elections held on Tuesday, PDP won 20 of the 21 seats so far declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Bayelsa State House of Assembly has 24 seats. Labour Party, despite all its media hype, could not win any seat. It was comprehensively defeated in the Kolokuma/Opukuma home constituency of its chief promoter, Mr. Ndutimi Alaibe. Even little known KOWA Party was able
to win one seat, the statement said.
Sylva said, “What the results clearly show is that elections are won on the strength of political structures built around the people, not on the basis of configurations erected around the media.”
He advised the Bayelsa electorate to continue to vote PDP as it is the only party with the capacity to address the myriad social and economic challenges facing the state.
