Twelve days after their entry into Fameland, the contestants of the 2011 edition of Star Quest staged their first musical performances after being grouped into bands.
In what could be termed the formal introduction of the bands to the public, the bands performed songs from ‘old school’. The six bands which would be competing for the Star Quest grand prize are: Bliss, Golden Flames, D_Xtreme, The Beat, The Harmonics and The Storm.
First to perform was Bliss which gave a sonorous rendition of Adure by Rex Lawson. The group’s interpretation of James Brown’s classic, ‘I Feel Good’, got the ecstatic crowd on its feet.
Performing after Bliss was the band, Golden Flames. The group, whose lead vocalists were adorning the afro hairstyles, performed Lagbaja’s ‘You’re Always On My Mind’. They rounded off their performance with Kool & The Gang’s ‘Celebration Time’.
The Beat opened its show with Nico Mbarga’s ‘Sweet Mother’. The band’s performance was considered less than impressive, judging by the reaction of the crowd.
The members’ attempt at showmanship, instead of effectively rendering their songs did not sway the crowd into dancing; quite unlike the previous bands that performed before them. However, their version of Bob Marley’s ‘Who The Cap Fit’ redeemed their lacklustre performance.
Next to perform was The Storm which opened their performance with Christy Essien’s ‘Omo Mi Seun Rere’. The band’s saxophonist was the cynosure of eyes as his instrumental interpretation was almost pitch perfect.
The Storm further laced their musical rendition with Mike Okri’s ‘Hear Your Mama’. They rounded off their performance with Cher’s Techno hit, ‘Do You Believe’.
The next band ushered on stage was the Harmonics. Their performance of Onyeka Onwenu’s ‘Ekwe’ wowed the crowd. They were the only band of the night that matched Bliss in vocal rendition and stagemanship.
After the high tempo of Ekwe, they serenaded the crowd with ‘Sexual Healing’, Marvin Gaye’s romantic classic.
