The Vice Principal (Academics) of Loral International Schools, Festac, Lagos, Mr Clement Ogunseye has advised the students of the school to make good use of the computers and internet facilities provided for them in the school to improve on their academic performances.
He said learning has been made easy nowadays following the availability of internet and other Information and Communications Technology, ICT, in most schools. According to him, it has become necessary to educate students on how they could use the internet for positive learnings, as the same internet could also be used for nefarious activities.
He enumerated of some of demerits of internet as included on-line fraud (yahoo-yahoo), internet dating by young people among others, which he said can affect the psychological and moral welbeing of the students.
Mr Ogunseye, who was speaking during the occasion of ‘Rewarding Academic Excellence/ Induction of exceptional students into the Platinum Club of the School, stressed that for students to use the internet positively, somebody must guide them. He said; “In the school setting, we have our ICT centre including cyber café. We are also aware of disadvantages of these facilities. That is why we have teachers who are in charge of the centre to guide and monitor what the students are doing. There are certain pages and website that we do not allow them to visit”.
The senior teacher however, urged the students to avail themselves of the numerous opportunities provided by the modern learning facilities in the school. “Knowledge is available now and learning has been made easier with the advent of the internet. All a student needs now is to go to the internet, browse and get whatever he/she wants. Students can now research and get information on any subject they are given assignment on. They can also empower themselves by interacting with those who are using the internet for positive things”, he stated.
He also charged them to emulate their counterparts in countries like Japan, Germany and United States who are making positive contributions to their society, saying “those are the kind of people they should be interacting with in the net, not those using the avenue for immoral things.”
