In its determination to sustain the greener Lagos initiative, an ongoing project of the Babatunde Fashola administration aimed at mitigating the effect of climate change, Lagos State Government has procured equipment to ensure healthy environment for economic growth and living.

Tree transplanting equipment

At the demonstration of the multi-million naira equipment known as spade tree transplanters at the weekend, the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire said the essence of the three tree transplanters which are of different capacities, is to ensure that the greener Lagos project being championed by his ministry continues as well as protect the trees for healthy environment. The commissioner who added that the purpose of greener Lagos is to mitigate the effect of climate change, pointed out that with the equipment, unwanted trees in the environment can be transplanted from their former locations to new areas rather felling the trees.

Disclosing that his ministry has enumerated the numbers trees to be uprooted by the equipment for onward transplanting in new locations, Dr. Banire said 30 out of 94 coconut trees enumerated for transplanting have been uprooted between Lagos/Badagry Expressway and Oshodi/Apapa Expressway for transplanting in other areas of the state need the trees.

The helmsman of the Environment Ministry who stated that the equipment is for government use, however added that individuals who wish to use them will have to formally apply to the Department of Conservation and Ecology in the Ministry for a token, explaining that some staff of the ministry were sent to the United States of America where the equipment were manufacture for training on the use and operation of the equipment.
