Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State branch has promised prompt delivery of services in the state provided a minimum of one million Lagosians can donate as little as N20 to the success of the organisation.
Addressing journalists to herald the 50th anniversary of the organisation, which took place at its Makoko office in Lagos, Branch chairman, Mobolaji Onibudo lamented that inadequate funding has been a major challenge facing the organisation in the past years. “Finance is our major challenge, especially for sustainability and effectiveness of these projects as we are a non-profit making and non-government organisation. I seize this this opprtunity to call on well-meaning Nigerians to support the work of the Red Cross as it could be one of them or a close relation that will be saved tomorrow by Red Cross volunteers as you never can tell what may happen the next minute,” he said.
Among other things, Onibudo said the 50th anniversary will include First Aid Simulation at Yaba and Oyingbo roundabouts on February 12, 2011; 5,000 man walk for the abandoned on February 19, 2011; Jumat service on February 11; Church service on February 13 and award and investiture ceremony on March 12, 2011.
‘’If one million Lagosians could donate just N20 each, we shall be able to do what is expected of us as a humanitarian organisation. We have the potentials but finance has been our major constraint. Inadequate funding has not allowed us to achieve our goals,” he added.
