IBADAN—AS the April elections draw near, the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday, warned politicians to refrain from foisting themselves on the people and eschew all forms of violence that could threaten democracy.
He spoke at the commissioning of the Centre of Primary and Community Health, donated by the Kola Daisi Foundation, KDF, to the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan yesterday.
The former Head of State appealed to the political players to allow God to use them and not force themselves on people.
He said, “I beg each and everyone of us to shun violence in this coming election”.
Leaders are chosen by God and He chooses whoever He wishes. Let us all work for free and fair election. To you politicians, you need to realize that you can serve people without occupying elective offices. Chief Daisi is a good example. Please let us join hands together to make Nigeria a beautiful country to be.”
Abubakar was applauded by many people at the gathering for handing over power to a democratically elected government in 1999.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the foundation, Prof. Adeniyi Osuntogun, said, “As part of the Foundation’s commitment to community development, the Foundation decided to embark on the building of a structure that would provide comprehensive health care services to a selected community while partnering with the UCH to provide the manpower and specialist equipment to achieve this.
The vision is to replicate this model in future in as many communities as reasonably practicable.”
