Senator Ajuji Waziri, husband of Mrs. Farida Waziri, Chairman, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has denied using his wife to settle political scores following his failure to win the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), ticket for re-election to the Senate.

His denial followed the arrest last Thursday of Mr. Robinson Wasa, the Chairman of Billiri Local Government of Gombe State, by agents of EFCC. The arrest, sources claimed, followed the alleged role of the local government chairman in the mobilisation of votes against Senator Waziri during the PDP primaries.

Senator Waziri, presently representing Gombe South Senatorial District, lost the ticket to a former deputy governor of the state, Joshua Lidani.

The arrest of Wasa, Sunday Vanguard gathered, was equally generating tension in the Southern senatorial district as it is believed that he is under consideration for nomination as running-mate to the PDP gubernatorial flag-bearer, Alhaji Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. His arrest by EFCC was generally believed to be a last-minute retribution by Waziri to stop the political momentum of the chairman.

Waziri, however, denied any role in the arrest.

“No, no, no, his arrest has nothing political at all. It is a problem he has with EFCC since last year,” the senator told Sunday Vanguard in telephone interview.

The reason for his arrest was yet to be made public as at press time. It was, however, gathered that Wasa was also arrested late last month and released just days before the PDP primaries in the state.

A source at EFCC equally distanced political considerations for the arrest of the embattled political chieftain.

His wife, Mrs. Rebacca Wasa, however, denied EFCC’s claim as she told reporters at the weekend that the arrest of her husband was not unconnected to his alleged role in the PDP senatorial primaries in which Waziri, a native of the local government area lost.

Meanwhile, the Gombe Police Command has warned political stakeholders in the area to avoid any situation that could lead to the breakdown of law and order.
