POLITICAL tension heightened in Edo State, yesterday, as aspirants of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, scrambled for votes from party members in the party’s National Assembly and state Assembly primaries. Late arrival of materials characterised the exercise in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Voters arrived the venue at about 8:30am but there were no materials until  about 2:30pm when officials started distributing froms from Benin City to the other senatorial districts.

However, a member of the Monitoring Committee, Mr Joe Atohengbe, explained that the delay was because “people were scrambling for materials instead of allowing us follow it systematically but by the time they choked up the distribution center in Benin, it became difficult for people to get materials to their respective areas.”

Meanwhile, there was free for all fight at Irrua and Ekpoma in Edo Central senatorial district, when supporters of the party engaged themselves in a fisticuffs over money given to them by an aspirant. The fight took place at Eguare primary school and Ewonogie Primary school.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was accosted by newsmen at the George Idah Primary School, Oredo Ward II, while monitoring the exercise, expressed dissatisfaction with the late  arrival of materials at voting centers and said he was consulting with party leaders to find out what the problem was.

His words, “I am going round to see things for my self. I think you should ask those who are conducting the exercise the problem. I am going round to see what is happening and I have also called the state chairman of the party and told him that I am not satisfied that at this point in time, they have not started accreditation. But he was giving me all kinds of excuses. I am not satisfied that materials have not got here.”
