The sporadic sound of gun shots from robbers jolted residents of Leslie road, Ilaro in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State recently, as most of them scampered in different directions for safety, to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

uspects: Adekunle Adebowale and Ganiu Wasiu

The six-man robbery gang as gathered, stormed a provision store where they ordered the owner and his wife to lie flat on the floor. While two members of the gang went about ransacking the shop in search of money, another two positioned themselves at the entrance, while the rest stood by the road  watching out for any intruder.

At that point, owner of the shop, one Mr Egbo, took a close watch at the invaders, where he discovered that only one of those in the shop was armed. He reportedly took a bold step by attacking  the one with a gun as he was about stepping out of the shop with the loots.

The gallant step paid off, as he managed to disarm the robber and thereafter, raised an alarm which those outside apparently mistook for the arrival of policemen, prompting them to flee the scene on their motorcycles.

But a suspected member of the gang later identified as Ganiu Wasiu, was however, unlucky as he was apprehended by an angry mob who pounced on him, until the arrival of policemen from Ilaro Division.

Preliminary investigation by detectives at the Ogun State Criminal Investigation Department where the arrested suspect was transferred to, reportedly led to the arrest of another member of the gang.

In this interview, 21-year-old  Ganiu, claimed the operation was the first he had taken part in since he joined the  gang. The one time commercial motorcyclist blamed his indulgence on his inability to meet up with life’s challenges particularly financially. But in a low tone, he cursed the day he came in contact with one  Adekunle Adebowale, whom he said introduced him into robbery.

Hear him, “ I curse the day I met Adekunle Adebowale. I wish that day never existed, at least I would not have been where I am today. I came in contact with  Adekunle in a beer parlor, where he bought some drinks for me. I was surprised at the way he was spending lavishly and wished I could have as much to spend like him. We thereafter, exchanged telephone numbers, after I narrated how I have been struggling without luck to get money.

Next day, I called him to ask if he had anything I could do to make money and he told me to come over, offering me a tempting amount at the end of the job. But to my surprise, when I got to the location, I saw four other men, one of them with a big bag. Immediately they saw me, they brought out the contents inside the bag where to my astonishment, I discovered they were guns. I was told it was too late to back out and was therefore assigned a job to do. I was told I would be the one to collect the loot with any of the armed men, which I obeyed . But unfortunately, I was caught because I was not familiar with the terrain,” stated the Ijebu-Igbo born suspect.

Corroborating his claim, 24-year-old Adekunle also claimed a  friend  introduced him to members of  the gang. According to him, “ I joined because I have been  without a job for over one year”, revealing that he had so far partaken in three operations  within Ilaro, until his arrest.

The Ogun state Police Commissioner , Mr Musa Daura said efforts were on top gear to arrest otherfleeing members, adding that at the end of investigation the arrested suspects would be charged to court.
