Jos — The violence caused by the alleged killing of eight people along the Jos-Mangu Halle highway in Plateau State continued in Angwan Doki area of Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, yesterday, resulting in the burning of houses and general disorder.
Security men had a difficult time restoring order as those whose houses were torched mobilised for reprisals leading to serious tension in Angwan Doki area of the council headquarters.
It was learnt that the town was divided along ethno-religious lines as people gathered to launch attacks or counter-attacks one side against the other.
The tension forced many people to remain indoors in the Jos metropolis while there was a general security alert in most parts for fear of outbreak of violence.
Spokesman for the Special Task Force maintaining security in the state, Capt. Charles Ekeocha who confirmed the violence in Bukuru in a telephone interview said everything was being done to bring the situation under control.
He told Vanguard that a number of houses were torched but could not confirm if there was any killing as the area was still tense.
Igbo group warns
Meanwhile, a Jos-based Igbo socio-cultural group, Izu Umunna Cultural Association, has warned that it will no longer fold its hands and watch the blood of innocent Igbo men and women being spilled on the streets of Jos in the recurring crisis.
A statement jointly signed by the President, Prof Zebulon Okoye and Secretary General, Chief Elvis Chukwu, said Igbo had continued to be targets of attacks in the violence, saying, “enough is enough.”
It expressed worry at what it called the consistent failures on the part of various security agencies to forestall and apprehend the perpetrators of these dastardly acts and the inability of government to bring culprits of previous violence and their sponsors to justice but said Igbo have refused to be cowed by the situation.
