The Associate Professor of Accounting and Finance, Osun State University, Osogbo, Dr. Ishola Rufus Akintoye has said that success in examinations lies on both the students and the teachers as the performance of students are the best way of assessing a good teacher.

He stated this recently while delivering a speech on “Preparing your Students for the Best Result,” a programme organized by The League of Professionals, packaged for professional tutors to enhance pro-activeness.

Speaking to the professional teachers at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Akintoye charged them to update themselves, read more books and carry out more research work than their students noting that the tutor is fulfilled when students under him succeed as successful students make successful teachers.

He said: “Human knowledge is generally limited to the level of psychological awareness. This awareness can be developed or modified to increase or decrease by the level of information available. It is therefore important that for a good result, every student must be prepared by informed”

The Chattered Accountant enjoined teachers to prepare adequately their lesson notes before coming to teach, stressing that preparation is necessary so that the predetermined objective could be achieved. “Preparation  increases your confidence and knowledge,” he said.

Akintoye pointed out that the level of any achievement of a teacher is measured by the ability to manage or reduce some of the attendant constraints if it cannot be totally eliminated maintaining that a learner therefore needs to be instructed on how to cope with disseminated knowledge under a guided environment so that the desired future state can be achieved.

He said: “A student is someone willing to learn, under a specific or general field of interest and has the full capacity to retain knowledge useful for now and the future.

He is a learner under some specific instructions and guidance to a future state.”

According to Akintoye, “ there are about thirteen steps to preparing students for good results which include: Preparation as a teacher and understand every detail of the subject matter; understand pivot elements in the subject matter as a teacher, make enough notes on your preparations, understand the reason for the program in question, understand the linkage among various subjects in the program, develop course descriptions and syllabus that are based on the goals of the program and deliver basic lecture and information in the subject matter with its pivot elements.

Others are: Formulation and implementation of classroom strategies to achieve the course goals, use appropriate evaluation tools to determine learners knowledge, encourage a feedback system through question and answers, encourage learners to share knowledge through class-work, tests, assignments, seminars etc, building a culture of continuous learning, develop team spirit through group assignments and using case studies while teaching.

For students to get the best result in every examination, Akintoye reiterated that teachers should encourage questions and answers in the class and outside the classroom, ensuring that  past relevant questions in the subject matter are both practiced in the classroom and by individual.

Teachers should identify all relevant models and formulas in the subject matter and  letting students understand how they are developed and applied as they assess students before examinations, correct and return corrected papers with necessary tutorials to them.
