Sambo shelves visit to Delta State

However, the nullification of the 2007 Delta State Gubernatorial Election yesterday claimed its first major victim, with the cancellation of Vice President Namadi Sambo’s proposed visit to the oil rich state.

The two days’ visit was billed for today and tomorrow but had to be shelved indefinitely following what sources said was the political uncertainty in the state.

Sambo was expected to inspect key power projects in Ughelli and Sapele but put off the visit due to Tuesday’s sacking of Emmanuel Uduaghan as governor of the state.

Highly placed presidency source told Vanguard that Uduaghan is a key member of the Presidential Committee on National Independent Power Projects, NIPPs, for the South South zone.

The source said Uduaghan had a better understanding and knowledge of the projects to be inspected by the vice president, and his unavoidable absence during the visit will be a bad omen, hence the cancellation of the proposed trip.

It was not, however, clear if Sambo will rescheduled the visit to the state within the 90 days stipulated by the court for the conduct of a re-election.

Another source said the move by the vice president to put off the working visit may be to allow the acting governor settle down for a while before a new date is fixed.
