Group condemns attacks on leaders’ country homes

Yenagoa—The group Niger Delta Development Monitoring and corporate Watch, NIDDEMCOW, has condemned the spate of attacks on the country homes of prominent indigenes of Bayelsa State by unknown gunmen.

Executive Director of the group, Nengi James, made the condemnation in the wake of last Friday’s attack on the Opokuma country home of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Timi Alaibe, and that of the State Director of Treasury, Chief Godspower Okpoi, at Ikibiri.

James also expressed concern over the attacks on the homes of His Royal Highness Edmund Daukoru, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly,  Hon. Nestor Binabo, Chief Rufus Abadi, Chief (Major) Adigio, HRH Amalatei Turner, Hon. Waripamowei Dudafa and Rt. Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi, among others.

He urged the government to identify the motives of the attackers adding that the duty of government is to protect lives and property of the people.

While reiterating that youth employment and modification of the Amnesty Programme and the implementation of the Ledum Mitee-led Niger Delta Technical Committee recommendations are very crucial to peace in the Niger Delta.

He called on government and security agencies to live up to their responsibilities and expressed fear that the attacks are coming barely few months to the 2011 general elections.
