Four football clubs from Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and host Lagos state all in the South West zone will from Thursday, begin the battle for the first BRF Club Cup tournament which has N1million prize money at stake.
The clubs according to chairman of the South West FA Chairmen Forum, Taiwo Ogunjobi include Bridge FC of Lagos, Osun United, Gateway of Ogun and Fountain FC from Ekiti. The tournament kicks off with host, Bridge FC of Lagos taking on Osun United at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere at 4 pm.
There will also be matches on Friday as the tournament rounds off Saturday at the same venue.
Addressing the press Monday, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi said the Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola agreed to sponsor the tournament to the tune of N10 million as a means of encouraging the clubs to prepare well ahead of the commencement of the national pro-division 1 and the national amateur leagues.
Winner of the four club tournament will get N400,000, N300,000 for the runners up while third and fourth placed teams will get N175,000 and N125,000 respectively.
Ogunjobi further disclosed that but for the fact that the premier league had already commenced, clubs like Sunshine Stars and 3SC would have been part of the tournament. He promised that the premier league clubs would take part next year.
